If you wouldn’t call yourself “religious” or you’re not a regular church-goer, then keep reading. Perhaps you are just curious, or maybe thinking of coming but need some answers first. That’s fine. We’re here to help people discover that it’s possible to find God without becoming “religious” in the weird way that most people imagine that word.
We know that coming to church can maybe feel a little daunting if it’s not your usual thing, and so we aim to be a place where new people will feel at ease and at home. Actually, Church doesn’t get much more down-to-earth than it is here at Bodmin Road. God loves you, and we really just want to help you discover that for yourself, at your own speed. On the journey of faith, it’s important that you can be yourself and ask your questions. We aim to make church a safe place to do that.
The Christian Message in a Nutshell
There is a God-shaped hole in each of us that only God can fill. God created us to be his friends, but most of the time we go it alone. God is trying to get our attention. He is appealing to us: “don’t leave me out of your life”. Jesus came, God in human flesh, to help us find our way back to God. He died on the cross to take our sins away, so that we can have a new, clean start. And he rose again so that we can really experience God’s love in our lives now and go to heaven when we die. The Holy Spirit can make all that real and personal in our hearts today. He gives us belonging, purpose and freedom. We all need the forgiveness and freedom Jesus offers. As a church our aim is to communicate that message in plain English.
Frequently Asked Questions
What sort of a church are you?
We are an independent church without any denomination. There are thousands of churches like this in the UK. Our teaching and practice are mainstream Christian (so nothing weird) and we have very good links to the rest of the churches in Hull. In many ways we are quite like a Baptist church.
Can anyone come on a Sunday?
Sunday services are open to the public. Anyone can come. No booking, you just turn up, walk straight in and grab a seat. Don’t think church is just for “good” people or just for “believers”. That’s really not the case. We are open to ALL, no matter what.
Will I have to speak or “do” anything?
No. You can sit at the back and just observe if you like. There is no pressure and no service books to follow or read aloud from.
What actually happens in a service?
Basically, we sing some songs, we pray, and we have some Bible teaching. And once a month we have some lunch together as well at the end. If you want to “sample” a service before you come, you can watch any Sunday morning service live on our church Facebook page.
Does it cost anything?
NO. We do take an offering during the service by passing an offering bag, but there is no pressure to give, especially not for visitors.
What should I wear?
Just come in whatever makes you feel most comfortable. We’re not a suit and tie church!
Can I bring the kids?
Absolutely! We have quite a few children at Bodmin Road, from babies right through to teenagers. We have a creche, and groups for the older kids too (or they can sit with you if you prefer). We’re up-to-speed with our Safeguarding too, so your children are safe.
Do you have disabled access?
YES. All our building in on one level, with no steps at the front door. We have chairs, not pews, so space can be made easily for a wheelchair. We also have a disabled toilet.
Do you have a hearing loop system?
Yes
Can I find out more without coming on a Sunday?
Absolutely. And there are many ways you can do that:
– Tune in to our live services via our Facebook page
– Watch our weekly Seekers & Cynics Videos
– Email us via the contacts page and request some Christian literature
– We are also very happy to meet you for a coffee and have a chat if that helps
